Let me explain: he was aware of the true personalities of everyone, with many failures and quirks. From the first moment he looked at someone, they had worth. Charles and Mariana met as youngsters, straight out of college, and one day drove through the picturesque town Utrecht, located in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and decided that this will be where they spend their life. They had three children, Charles, Pieter and Alida. He would wake up at 4 every morning, do farming chores, then worked as a full time teacher, coach various sport activities and grade papers late afternoon. He bought his first piece of land about 10 years after moving to Utrecht. Not everyone shared his enthusiasm, but as fate would have it, one of SA's toughest droughts started soon after and lasted for a few years, bringing farmers from all over SA to their knees. The unexpected drought drove the price of mielies sky-high and, very soon, Charles invested in a second and third irrigation system. His careful planning and insightful preparation for the unexpected earned him the title of selfmade man. As the next generation took over the farming business, he decided to invest in the tyre industry.
